The action takes place in 1942 in Nazi-occupied territory. Among the forests and captured villages of Smolensk region, the main characters of the film - a Soviet girl and a German young officer-have to make the main choice in their lives - to be or not to be a human? The tragedy of human destinies is shown against the background of a global catastrophe-the war is not black or white but rather "gray" and universal tragedy: even among the enemies there may be a good person amd among ours - a traitor. And this is not an attempt to revise history from the perspective of fashionable in the West revisionism. The main criterion is humanity-for the twenty-FIRST century covered by armed conflicts, the concept is more than relevant.
