A day in Berlin during the Great Depression in the late 1920s. The paths of different young people cross. The unemployed taxi driver Emanuel is about to leave town. But once again he wants to cross them in the car. His friend Fritz lends him his taxi. Fritz also has problems, suffering from the fact that his girlfriend Frieda is being sexually blackmailed by her boss. Emanuel meets two dancing girls on the way and falls in love with one - Susi, who is also taken with the shy young man.
